The "Oggy"?

Traditionalists claims the pasty was originally made as lunch for Cornish tin miners who were unable to return to the surface to eat. They were able to hold the pastry by the folded crust so that the dirt didn’t touch the rest of their food, then discard that section afterwards.

Devon types tend to have a crimped crust running along the top and are oval in shape. Cornish variety are semi-circular with a thicker crust running along the curved edge of the pasty.

In 2006 Devon historian Todd Gray uncovered a shopping list dating back to 1510 which listed the ingredients of pasties - 230 years before the first Cornish written reference to the snack.

Triumphant Devonians have since claimed it is conclusive evidence the pasty, which makes the Cornish £60 million a year, originated with them.
