Motorcyclist Life Support Course
19th June 2010

Since England XIV was formed, we have tried to achieve a First Aid course specifically for motorcyclists. It seemed a simple enough idea, but throw into the equation, economics, it became very difficult. Well, that was until Ruth & Glynn joined the Chapter. They, and one of their son’s Tom, are involved with the Royal Life Saving Society and run he local club. Tom is a qualified Instructor in everything as well as First Aid and they volunteered there services.
So it was, that only five members found themselves at the Sea Cadet HQ’s in Weston-super-Mare on Saturday 19th June 210. The usual suspects of Pete, Muddy and Cookie, joined by recent transferee Barrie and his wife Marcie and Cookie’s son, Dan. Barrie had also arranged for ten members of Bridgwater Chapter of HOG to attend as well. So the fifteen enjoyed a VERY hearty fat boys to start, before Tom started the course.
I do not intend to run through the contents of the course as you really do need to do one yourself. But, for the likes of Barrie, Muddy, Pete and I, it was re-training as First Aid has changed since we all did it. Well, apart from the recovery position. Thank goodness for that, we at least were able to do one thing!
Tom went through the course using PowerPoint and then practical exercises with the dummies. Well, until Muddy and Pete stopped messing around that is! Sorry Guys, but too good to resist! During the practical, both Ruth and Glynn were on hand to help and advice, and believe me, we did need help.
We did have a laugh, but we also learnt a lot. There is so much that has changed, and we all felt that the course was very much worth the effort to attend. My only regret is that more members had not been able to join us. When you take into account the cost of donation, which included the breakfast, teas and coffee’s as well as biscuits not to mention the actual course itself, what value it was. It would be good if members, who were not able to attend this time, attend another course in the future – you would not regret it – we didn’t!
Our grateful thanks must go to Tom, Ruth & Glynn who did a tremendous job and kept it very interesting. I should also thank their other sons, George & Ben who helped out during the course to make the day run smoothly. What a family affair! Thanks to you all.
