St George's Knight...
... Return to the Riviera!
Friday 15th and Saturday 16th April 2011 (or longer!)
After the huge success of last year’s event, England XIV invite you to join them for a return to the heart of the English Riviera for their third celebration of St Georges Day. Because St Georges Day falls during the Easter period, we are going to celebrate it one week early. We also invite you to bring along some friends - we don't mind as we want to make this another special celebration. We only have a limit on the numbers that we can cater for. Be sure you book before all the places have gone!
Please ensure that you book early - as places will be limited this year because of the size of the function room. If you book early, payment can be arranged for a later date. We just need to know that you are committed to coming and celebrating with us. You are guaranteed to enjoy yourself. Just look at the report on the 2010 event!
We have arranged a weekend package of two night’s dinner bed and breakfast which includes the 5 course Gala dinner on the Saturday night. Those who came in 2010 will remember the fantastic food, friendly staff and of course, the beautiful Torbay area!
The actual function is to be held on the night of Saturday 16th April at the Headland Hotel, Daddyhole Road, Torquay TQ12EF and will consist of a formal dinner with “black tie” dress code.
Because guests are likely to have travelled some distance and may wish to stay extra nights at the Hotel to enjoy some of the attractions of the Torbay area, we have negotiated a special dinner bed and breakfast rate.
Please note that it is hotel policy is not to let rooms on a one night only basis at weekends.
How much?
The hotel has agreed to special rates for bed and breakfast on the two nights (Fri/Sat) with dinner on Friday and Gala Dinner (see details below) and our own function room on the Saturday. That means that the total for guests wishing to stay for the two nights, is £123.00 per person.
For those attending the Gala Dinner only, the cost is £30 per person.
This is a very slight increase on last year but we think you will appreciate the standard of the chosen Hotel. You can visit the hotel's website and see for yourself what it has to offer us.
Extra Nights.
If anyone would like to stay on the Sunday night the hotel can do this at a special discounted offer of £38.00 per person to include Dinner, Bed & Breakfast.
The Gala Evening.
Now for the Gala Dinner and Celebration evening on Saturday 16th April The following is all included in the total price.
The Headland, a Duchy Hotel, is situated on quiet Daddyhole Road, Torquay, about 10/15 min walk from the town centre and harbour. It has an outdoor heated pool, mini-gym and sauna. (Website)
Then, if that hasn't quite convinced you, read on and see what the area has to offer. Remember, this is the English Riviera!
What to see
Torquay itself has many attractions, see here. It is famous for being the location for the fictitious Fawlty Towers, unfortunately based on a real Torquay Hotel experienced by John Cleese. We do not think the Headland Hotel has any rooms from which you can see “The Hanging Gardens of Babylon or herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically……… but in addition to the shops, harbour side bars and cafes, are the Model Village at Babbacombe, which is a couple of miles from the Hotel out of town towards Teignmouth (not just a children’s attraction – highly recommended), Bygones also at Babbacombe, which is an inside reconstruction of an old fashioned street of shops which will take you back to your childhood. Just before Babbacombe is Kent’s Cavern, the 2 million year old underground attraction! On the seafront is a tethered balloon which rises 400 feet to give the passengers in its huge basket marvellous views of the town, harbour and coast. Great for the photographer.
Across the bay is the quaint fishing port of Brixham, home to one of the largest fishing fleets in the UK. This is about half an hour by car or by the ferries which cross from harbour to harbour daily. Situated between Torquay and Brixham is Paignton, with its magnificent zoo. A steam railway links Paignton with Kingswear and across the river Dart by ferry, vehicular and pedestrian, is the beautiful and famous port of Dartmouth, home of the Royal Naval College which stands magnificently on the hillside above the town. Moored in the middle of the river Dart is the Resnova floating restaurant, which makes a beautiful and unusual location for lunch. Call 07770628967 and a complimentary water taxi will collect you!
It would assist the Chapter and the Hotel greatly if those wishing to attend inform us of their choice of menu, whether double or twin room is preferred and provide a cheque for the total amount at the time of booking. If this is not quite achievable, then please contact us by email link on the left.
Remember, Book Early to avoid disappointment!
